Good morning, and welcome to Grace For Another Morning.

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

John 15:5

There is a difference between being busy and being fruitful.

We can fill every hour of the day and still accomplish very little that has lasting value. We can answer messages, solve problems, complete chores, make plans, attend meetings, and reach the end of the day exhausted.

Activity can make us feel productive.

But Jesus did not tell His disciples to remain constantly busy. He told them to abide in Him.

“I am the vine, ye are the branches.”

A branch does not produce fruit by struggling harder. It produces fruit because it remains connected to the vine. The life that produces the fruit does not originate in the branch. It comes through the vine.

The same is true in our spiritual lives.

Sometimes we become so occupied doing things for God that we neglect spending time with God. Prayer becomes hurried. Scripture becomes something we intend to read later. Quiet moments disappear beneath another list of things that must be done.

Yet Jesus said plainly:

“Without me ye can do nothing.”

That does not mean we are incapable of activity without Him. We can certainly stay busy. We can make decisions, build things, organize things, and fill our calendars.

But spiritual fruit is different.

Love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness, kindness, wisdom, and the quiet influence of a life surrendered to Christ cannot simply be manufactured by effort.

They grow from abiding.

There may even be seasons when God asks us to do less so that our hearts can become more attentive to Him.

The world often measures a successful day by how much was accomplished.

God may measure it differently.

Perhaps today the most fruitful thing you do will be encouraging someone who is discouraged.

Perhaps it will be praying quietly for someone who never knows you prayed.

Perhaps it will be choosing patience when irritation would have been easier.

Perhaps it will simply be sitting with your Bible for a few quiet minutes and allowing God’s Word to settle into your heart.

Fruitfulness is not always dramatic.

Often it grows quietly.

The branch does not announce that fruit is coming. It simply remains connected to the vine, receives what it needs, and in time the fruit appears.

So before rushing into everything waiting for you today, remember where your strength comes from.

Remain close to Christ.

Let prayer come before pressure.

Let Scripture come before the noise of the day.

Let your relationship with Jesus become the source from which your activity flows.

Because a busy life may impress people.

But a life abiding in Christ bears fruit that lasts.

Grace for Today

You do not have to prove your faithfulness by filling every moment with activity. Stay close to Christ, and allow Him to produce the fruit that effort alone never can.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, keep me from confusing busyness with fruitfulness. When I become distracted by everything I think must be done, draw my heart back to You. Teach me to abide in Christ, to listen before I rush, and to depend upon Your strength rather than my own. Let the work of my hands and the words of my mouth grow from a heart that remains close to You. Produce in my life the fruit that brings honor to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

You do not have to accomplish everything today. Stay connected to the Vine. Walk with Christ through what is before you, and trust Him with the fruit.
