Good morning, and welcome to Grace For Another Morning.
Anchor Scripture — Matthew 11:28–30 (KJV) “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28–30 (KJV)We have spent this week learning to leave some very heavy things behind.
Old hurts.
Bitterness.
Anger.
Regret.
Grief.
Memories that kept pulling us backward.
We pictured all of that as a 10,000-pound suitcase we had dragged through life far longer than God ever intended.
We brought it to the Lord.
Sometimes we picked it back up.
So we put it back down.
Then we stopped staring at it.
Yesterday, we finally turned around and discovered something wonderful.
There is still a road ahead.
Now we have to walk it.
But notice something about Jesus’ words.
He never said we would walk through life carrying nothing.
Jesus said:
“Take my yoke upon you.”
There will still be things to carry.
There will still be responsibilities.
There will still be people who need us.
There will still be difficult days.
There will still be grief when someone we love is gone.
There will still be decisions to make, work to do, people to serve, and crosses to bear.
Following Christ does not mean walking through life empty-handed.
It means learning what belongs in our hands—and what belongs in His.
Think about taking a long walk with a small backpack.
You carry what you need.
Maybe some water.
Something to eat.
Perhaps a Bible.
A few things necessary for the journey.
The backpack has some weight.
But you can walk with it.
Now imagine trying to strap that 10,000-pound suitcase to your back too.
You wouldn’t make it very far.
Yet spiritually, that is exactly what many of us try to do.
We carry today’s responsibilities while adding yesterday’s anger.
We carry today’s relationships while adding yesterday’s betrayal.
We carry today’s decisions while adding yesterday’s regret.
We carry today’s challenges while adding tomorrow’s fear.
Before long, the backpack God gave us for today’s journey is buried beneath baggage He never asked us to carry.
Listen again to Jesus:
“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus did not say there would be no burden.
He said:
“My burden is light.”
There is a tremendous difference.
God never promised that we would walk through life carrying nothing. He does promise that we don’t have to carry everything.
Some things belong in the backpack.
Faith belongs there.
Responsibility belongs there.
Compassion belongs there.
Service belongs there.
Love belongs there.
The lessons God has taught us belong there.
And yes, sometimes sorrow travels with us for a while.
But bitterness does not need to come.
Unforgiveness does not need to come.
Yesterday’s anger does not need to come.
The guilt Christ has already forgiven does not need to come.
And fear of something that hasn’t even happened certainly does not need to come.
Travel light.
There is another part of Jesus’ invitation we must not overlook.
He said:
“Come unto me.”
Before He tells us about the yoke…
before He tells us about the burden…
before He tells us about the journey…
He says:
Come.
Come tired.
Come weary.
Come carrying too much.
Come when you don’t know what to put down.
Come when you aren’t sure what belongs in the backpack.
Come to Jesus.
Because Christianity is not simply learning better ways to carry life’s burdens.
It is walking with Christ.
And when Christ walks with us, we discover that we were never expected to carry everything ourselves.
Maybe you have spent years believing strength meant carrying everything without asking for help.
Maybe you thought faith meant never becoming tired.
Maybe you thought being a good Christian meant smiling while the weight quietly crushed you.
Jesus never said that.
He said:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
There is no shame in admitting something is heavy.
There is wisdom in knowing where to take it.
This week we have left a great deal behind.
Now don’t go back looking for something heavy simply because carrying heavy things became familiar.
Take what Christ gives you for today’s journey.
Leave what He has already taken from you.
Then walk.
Not burden-free.
But no longer burdened by everything.
Grace for Today
Reflection
What are you carrying today because it genuinely belongs to today’s responsibilities?
What have you packed into your life simply because you have carried it for so long that you forgot you could put it down?
Is there something in your backpack today that really belongs in the hands of Jesus?
Picture yourself preparing a small backpack for the road ahead.
Ask the Lord:
“What do I need for today’s journey, and what am I carrying that You never asked me to bring?”
Keep what helps you faithfully follow Christ.
Give Him what does not belong on your shoulders.
Then keep walking.
Travel light.
A Prayer for Today
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for walking with me through this week.
You have helped me look honestly at things I carried too long.
You have taught me to forgive, to surrender, to put old burdens back down, and to stop staring at what I have already placed into Your hands.
Now teach me how to walk forward.
Give me wisdom to know what I should carry and faith to surrender what belongs to You.
When today’s responsibilities become heavy, remind me that I do not walk alone.
When yesterday tries to climb back into my backpack, help me leave it behind.
And when I become tired, remind me of the invitation of Jesus:
“Come unto me.”
Teach me to take His yoke, trust His strength, and find rest for my soul.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Final Word
Closing
Tomorrow we gather around God’s Word, not merely to look back over where we have been, but to hear Christ’s invitation for the road still ahead.
The road is still there.
Christ is still with you.
And the burdens He has already received from your hands do not need to be picked up again.
