Good morning, and welcome to Grace For Another Morning.
“Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.”
Song of Solomon 2:15There are some things in life that appear too small to matter.
A little resentment.
A little dishonesty.
A little neglect.
A little compromise that we tell ourselves we can correct later.
Yet Scripture warns us that small things can cause great damage.
Song of Solomon speaks of “the little foxes, that spoil the vines.” The picture is simple. A vineyard may be growing well. Tender grapes may already be appearing. Everything may seem healthy. But small foxes slipping unnoticed among the vines can damage what has taken months of careful work to grow.
Our spiritual lives can be much the same.
Most people do not wake up one morning and decide to walk far away from God. The distance usually develops gradually.
One prayer is skipped.
Then another.
Something we know is wrong is excused because it seems insignificant.
A bitter thought is allowed to remain.
A questionable habit becomes familiar.
A small compromise becomes comfortable.
And eventually something that once troubled our conscience no longer seems very serious.
That is why the little foxes are dangerous.
They do not announce themselves as destroyers.
Compromise often arrives sounding reasonable.
Just this once.
It really does not matter.
Everyone does it.
Nobody will know.
I can stop whenever I want.
But the question for the Christian is not simply, “How much can I get away with?”
The better question is, “Will this help me remain close to God?”
There may be areas of your life that seem insignificant to everyone else but which God has been quietly bringing to your attention.
Do not ignore those gentle convictions.
God is not trying to take something good away from you. He may be protecting something precious that is growing in you.
A vineyard with tender grapes has something worth protecting.
So does your walk with Christ.
Your prayer life is worth protecting.
Your peace is worth protecting.
Your testimony is worth protecting.
Your relationships are worth protecting.
The work God is doing in your heart is worth protecting.
Small obedience matters because small compromise matters.
We sometimes wait for God to show us some great spiritual assignment while ignoring the small thing He has already placed before us.
Forgive that person.
Tell the truth.
Turn away from that temptation.
Keep your word.
Spend time with God.
Make right what you know needs to be made right.
Those decisions may seem small, but they shape the direction of a life.
This morning, ask God to show you whether any little foxes have found their way into the vineyard.
And when He shows you one, do not make excuses for it.
Deal with it while it is still small.
Grace for Today
Do not wait until a small compromise becomes a large problem. Ask God to show you anything quietly damaging your walk with Him, and choose obedience while the matter is still small.
A Prayer for Today
Father, search my heart and show me the small compromises I may have allowed into my life. Give me wisdom to recognize them and courage to deal with them before they cause greater harm. Help me guard the work You are doing within me and teach me to be faithful even in the things that seem small. Keep my heart close to You and my steps obedient to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
The little things are not always little in what they eventually produce. Guard the vineyard God has entrusted to you. One small act of obedience today may protect something precious tomorrow.
