Good morning, and welcome to Grace For Another Morning.
“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” — Luke 12:15
Luke 12:15We live in a world that keeps score.
The size of the house. The kind of car. The balance in the bank. The clothes in the closet. The things we have accumulated and the things we still hope to acquire.
Without realizing it, we can begin to measure a successful life by how much we possess.
Jesus turns that thinking upside down.
“A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
Jesus did not say possessions are evil. He warned us about something far more subtle: believing that possessions can tell us what a life is worth.
They cannot.
A person can have a full house and an empty heart. A person can have money in the bank and no peace in the soul. Someone can own almost everything the world says should make them happy and still discover that none of it can give life meaning.
Covetousness keeps whispering, “Just a little more.”
One more purchase.
One more upgrade.
One more achievement.
One more thing that will finally make us feel secure.
But “more” has no finish line.
Once we obtain the thing we thought would satisfy us, another thing appears just beyond it.
Jesus offers another way to measure life.
Not by what we possess, but by who we belong to.
Not by what we accumulate, but by what we treasure.
Not by what sits in our homes, garages, accounts, or closets, but by what is taking place within our hearts.
The Kingdom of God overturns the world's scoreboard.
A life rich in faith, love, generosity, mercy, gratitude, and fellowship with God may look unimpressive by the world's measurements and yet be rich beyond measure before God.
Everything we possess will eventually belong to someone else.
But the life we live before God matters for eternity.
Today, Jesus invites us to stop asking, “How much do I have?”
And begin asking:
“What has my heart?”
Grace for Today
You do not need more possessions to make your life more valuable.
Your worth is not determined by what you own, what you earn, or what you can afford.
God's grace frees us from the exhausting need to prove that our lives matter through accumulation.
Today, receive what God has given with gratitude and remember that the greatest treasures cannot be purchased.
A Prayer for Today
Father, guard my heart from covetousness.
Forgive me for the times I have measured my life by what I own, what I lack, or what others seem to have.
Teach me to be grateful for what You have provided and to recognize the things that truly matter.
Help me treasure You above possessions, love people more than things, and live with an open and generous heart.
Let my life be rich toward You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
You may not have everything you want, but that does not mean you have been given an inferior life.
Some of God's greatest gifts will never appear on a bank statement or sit on a shelf.
Peace, faith, love, mercy, friendship, purpose, forgiveness, and the presence of God cannot be bought.
Do not let the world's scoreboard convince you that you are poor when God has made you rich in the things that matter most.
