“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Romans 10:17 (KJV)Let us pray.
Father, open our ears to hear Your Word and open our hearts to receive it. Keep us from hearing only with the mind while the heart remains unchanged. Let Your truth take root in us, strengthen our faith, and draw us nearer to Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Church, there are many voices competing for our attention every day. The world speaks. Fear speaks. Memory speaks. Regret speaks. News speaks. People speak. And sometimes we can become so accustomed to noise that we forget what it means to truly hear.
But Romans 10:17 gives us a simple and powerful truth: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Faith does not grow because we surround ourselves with noise. Faith grows when the Word of God is heard, received, believed, and carried into life.
Paul does not tell us that faith comes by wishful thinking. He does not tell us that faith comes by pretending the trouble is not real. He does not tell us that faith comes by repeating whatever makes us feel better.
He says, “faith cometh by hearing.”
And then he tells us what must be heard: “the word of God.”
That means when fear tells you that tomorrow is hopeless, you need to hear the Word. When guilt tells you that grace cannot reach you, you need to hear the Word. When loneliness tells you that you have been forgotten, you need to hear the Word.
The Word reminds us who God is when our feelings are uncertain. The Word reminds us what Christ has done when our memory becomes clouded. The Word reminds us where our hope rests when the ground beneath us feels unstable.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
There is another truth here. Hearing is not merely sound reaching the ear. Biblical hearing carries the idea of receiving what is spoken. We can sit near Scripture and still resist it. We can hear a verse and never let it challenge us. We can know the words and still refuse the truth.
But when the heart becomes willing to hear, the Word begins to do what God intends it to do.
It corrects us. It comforts us. It convicts us. It strengthens us. It points us again and again to Jesus Christ.
Faith grows because the Word keeps directing our eyes away from ourselves and toward the One who is faithful.
Maybe today you came carrying a question you cannot answer. Maybe you came tired. Maybe you came discouraged. Maybe you have been praying for something so long that you are beginning to wonder whether anything is changing.
Do not let the silence around you become louder than the Word of God within you.
Hear again what God has spoken. Hear again that His grace is sufficient. Hear again that Christ is with His people. Hear again that His mercies are new every morning. Hear again that nothing can separate the believer from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Faith cometh by hearing.
So keep hearing the Word. Read it when you feel strong. Read it when you feel weak. Read it when you understand. Read it when you are still asking questions.
Let the Word become more familiar than your fear.
Let the promises of God become louder than the accusations of yesterday.
And let Jesus Christ remain at the center of everything you hear.
If you have never trusted Christ, today you can come to Him. The same Word that calls us to faith also tells us that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Salvation is not earned by our goodness. It is received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
If the Lord is drawing your heart, do not turn away. Come to Christ.
And if you already belong to Him, then return again to the Word. Listen again. Believe again. Walk again.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Let us pray.
Lord, give us ears to hear. When the world is loud, keep Your Word clear in our hearts. Strengthen our faith through Scripture, anchor us in Christ, and help us walk faithfully in what You have spoken. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Church, as we leave this place today, let’s not leave the Lord behind. Take Him with you into your homes, into your families, into your work, and into every place you go. Keep His Word near, keep your heart open, and keep walking with Christ until we gather again.
